2002 Boating Season
Pumpout Station - Farmer and Simpson Engineering Firm of Anderson is working with us, the Corps of Engineers and DHEC in Columbia to arrive at an acceptable design for a pumpout station at Big Water Marina. It seems, as usual, we're a little bit unique as most of the experience with pumpouts is with discharge into a local municipal sewer system. At Big Water, we'll be breaking new ground since we'll upgrade our existing septic system as well as add the pumpout. We want to start digging asap and be fully functional in July 2002.
City Water System - guess what, unique again! It seems that we are considered
a public utility since we dispense water on the docks. DHEC in Columbia would like
for us to close our well and provide city water at all spigots and the store. It's
only (?) a little more than a mile to the water main on Hwy. 29. Again Farmer and
Simpson of Anderson has helped us prepare bids and all the necessary drawings. We
have awarded the bid to a local Anderson plumbing company. System is complete
and functional.
Needless to say we'll be organizing the water leak lookout
squad. Remember every gallon will becoming by way of the local water company and
they are not shy about charging for every drop. Help us keep our costs down for slip
sake.
Picnic Shelter - picnic shelter is complete and a big addition.
We'll
have to decide how best to schedule the shelter. Our intent is to provide a gathering
place for our folks at the marina. We'll give priority to the sail club but I suspect
we'll have to start a calander. Given the cost of this enhancement, we'll more than
likely try to rent it to groups outside the marina if the opportunity allows and
it doesn't impose on activities at the marina. Check with Jane at the Marina office
for availability and rental cost.
Dry Stack Storage - I guess you've figured out that since there is a button
on the Home Page titled Dry Stack maybe there's something going on. Well you're right.
We are actively pursuing establishing a dry stack facility at Big Water. The plan
now is to use the field to the left of the gravel road as you turn into the marina.
We will launch and retrieve boats from old Hwy. 29 until the business builds to a
point it makes sense to build another ramp closer to the storage building. We would
also like to consider a travel lift pit and a 30 ton or so travel lift to handle
all those bigger boats you are anxious to trade up to.
Assuming the bank agrees,
we wold like to start building later this year and be available for storage June
2003.
