Big Water Sailing School @ Big Water Marina is a certified ASA ( American Sailing Association ) training facility. Our certified instructors and licensed captains are required by a national and international standard of sailing instruction to provide you with the best possible sailing education.

Big Water Sailing School @ Big Water Marina is located in a beautiful wooded cove along the southern end of Lake Hartwell, South Carolina only two miles from the Lake Hartwell Dam. We enjoy the largest open expanse of water on beautiful Lake Hartwell. This location provides the sailing enthusiasts with excellent open water for great sailing enjoyment. Lake Hartwell offers many miles of open water sailing dotted with many islands, coves and parks located along its' shore line for a cruiser's delight.

Big Water Marina is a full service facility complete with ship's store for your nautical needs, boat brokerage, boat storage, slips, launch ramp, gas dock, repair yard and rental boats for fun filled adventures awaiting you on Lake Hartwell.

Course Offerings

Certified Course - Basic Keelboat Sailing - BKB 101

Brand new or limited experience sailors will be coached and guided through this fun filled, action packed educational course by our ASA Certified Instructor / U.S.C.G. Licensed Captain. You will receive instruction aboard our 26" sailboat. Course limited to a maximum of four students and one instructor at our Lake Hartwell location.

A certified sailor will successfully identify parts of the sailboat, terminology used, points of sail, knots, apply navigation Rules, safety equipment, and safely sail in light to moderate winds in familiar waters without supervision.

Certified Course - Basic Coastal Cruising - BCC 103

Basic keelboat certified sailors and "experienced" sailors will hone their skills at our coastal location aboard a 30' plus auxiliary powered sailboat with our ASA Certified Instructor / U.S.C.G. Licensed Captain. Course limited to a maximum of six students.

A certified sailor will successful demonstrate increased knowledge of equipment , safety, seamanship, weather, reefing, compass usage, docking and safely cruise in local and regional waters in moderate winds and sea conditions.

Time - Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Certified Course - Bareboat Chartering - BBC 104

Basic Keelboat and Basic Coastal Cruising certified sailors will further develop their "cruising " skills at our coastal location aboard a 40' plus auxiliary powered sailboat. Cruising / liveaboard for 3 adventure filled days and nights with our Certified ASA Instructor / U.S.C.G. Licensed Captain. Course limited to a maximum of six students.

A certified sailor will successfully demonstrate continued knowledge of boat systems, maintenance procedures and safely cruise aboard for multi - days / nights in moderate winds and sea conditions.

Time - Board Thursday evening return Sunday afternoon.

Certified Course - Coastal Navigation

Sailors will learn the navigational theory, chart use and practical application requires to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. This is a non - sailing course guided by our ASA Certified Instructor.

Experience qualified sailors can sharpen their knowledge and on - the - water skills to become a ASA Certified Sailor through this self study course.

Our fun filled class is designed for those who would like to experience sailing without the commitment of a full certified course.
